IFTTT & The Inflatable House

February 3rd, 2012 in Design, Social Networking, Tools

The Inflatable House started life as a micro blog on Tumblr, hosting YouTube videos of music I’d come across and wanted to share. The along came This Is My Jam, which pretty much did the exact same thing – only a little more socially. I didn’t just want to abandon my Tumblr blog, so set about integrating my This Is My Jam updates in amongst the YouTube videos I was still adding.

Cloud Boxes

January 3rd, 2012 in Tools

A few months ago I signed up to Box.net — now just called Box — during their iOS 50gb promotion, I and many others received 50gb of free storage, forever, in exchange for signing up using their iPhone app. I was really impressed with the promotion – if you compare it to Dropbox’s free 2gb account or SugarSync’s 5gb then it’s miles out in front.

Speed Freaks

November 7th, 2011 in Design, Tools

I couple of weeks ago I was contacted on Twitter by Dan Fast from Shift Scape, he commented that my website was loading a little slow, that he was starting a service offering performance work on websites and would I mind being a test subject for the service.

Mini Me

November 7th, 2011 in Tools

No, this is not another post about my avatar, but a post about my new short URL I’ll be using to share links and images with and the service that’s doing all the work – CloudApp. I’ve had CloudApp installed on my Mac for ages, but only used it once or twice in the space of a couple of years. I knew how clever it was, but I just couldn’t work out how I could use it… until recently.

Tick Tock Tictoc

July 12th, 2011 in Tools

After a long search, Ive finally found a time tracking app Im happy with. There are loads currently out there on the market, many do the task of tracking your time spent in a similar fashion, but I had some very specific requirements – because I knew exactly how I wanted to use it.

Bye Bye Stickies

July 11th, 2011 in Tools

Hello Simplenote! I’ve been using OS X’s stickies app for years, I use them to keep notes on current projects – kind of like an extended todo list that details everything needed to achieve on the project, which is too much detail for my todo list app of choice Teux Deux. Stickies have started to be limiting.

View Your iPhone Locations

May 12th, 2011 in Tools

A few weeks ago it came to light that iPhone’s kept a record of their previous locations, Apple have since released an update that will wipe this data and in the future keep less (or none) of it. If you haven’t already updated to 4.3.3 you can get your location data and with the help of OpenPaths view it on maps and download it for your own use.

About a year ago Google announced that website speed would become a factor when ranking its search engines results pages. Following this up, they’ve now launched Page Speed Online. It’s a beta project which measures your website’s performance, gives you a score out of 100 and follows up with some tips and tricks to help improve your websites performance – which could help raise you up in its results pages.

Google Chrome + WebFonts Bug

March 29th, 2011 in Design, Tools

Since my switch to Google Chrome last week I’ve noticed a few issues with Google’s own Font API service. I couldn’t work out why some websites that used the fonts would display perfectly, websites I created never worked. I tested out so many variations – all of them worked in other browsers such as Firefox and Safari, but not in Chrome.

Firefox 4 – 10 Google Chrome

March 24th, 2011 in Tools

I’ve long been a Firefox user, and up until yesterday was happy with each update that arrived – but version 4 was different, it was pretty disappointing to say the least. I’ve always thought that Firefox embedded itself well into the Mac OS X environment, taking a pinch of its looks from Apple’s own style guide. But this latest version doesn’t have that same look and feel to it.
