Google Chrome + WebFonts Bug

March 29th, 2011 in Design, Tools

Since my switch to Google Chrome last week I’ve noticed a few issues with Google’s own Font API service. I couldn’t work out why some websites that used the fonts would display perfectly, websites I created never worked. I tested out so many variations – all of them worked in other browsers such as Firefox and Safari, but not in Chrome.

Firefox 4 – 10 Google Chrome

March 24th, 2011 in Tools

I’ve long been a Firefox user, and up until yesterday was happy with each update that arrived – but version 4 was different, it was pretty disappointing to say the least. I’ve always thought that Firefox embedded itself well into the Mac OS X environment, taking a pinch of its looks from Apple’s own style guide. But this latest version doesn’t have that same look and feel to it.

March 15th, 2011 in Film & Photography, Tools

After about three and a half months of near continuous work – our entire DVD film collection has been ripped, converted and is now stored on a Western Digital NAS drive available for Apple TV2. Here’s how I did it.

Tweet Nest was mentioned in a tweet by Paul Boag (@boagworld) earlier this week, describing a tool to back up your tweets and to make the archive easily searchable. Sounded great.

The Inflatable House on Tumblr

November 4th, 2010 in Design, Tools

The Inflatable House was initially a podcast and blog set up for myself and a friend to host mixes and our music related posts, but after a few months our attention drifted to other projects and the podcast laid dormant. A few months ago I came up with an idea for a notice board for people to post music to, a place where people could shout about their new favourite record – the idea came at the time as I wanted to further explore Tumblr.

Tumblr Favourites

October 31st, 2010 in Social Networking, Tools

Tumblr is quickly becoming one of my favourite blogging tools, the simplicity of posting content along with a dashboard that can become quite addictive once you start following other blogs, make it a service that sits perfectly between the 140 character micro blogging of Twitter and blogs like this one.

Hipstamatic + TwitPic* = Instagram

October 10th, 2010 in Film & Photography, Social Networking, Tools

Instagram has been mentioned a lot in my Twitter stream over the last couple of days, and rightly so. It’s a great photo sharing application with a camera app that’s capable of creating some lovely filtered images. At first look I wasn’t sure I was going to use it – the filters are so similar to Hipstamatic – but because the pixel size is only 612 x 612, it was never going to have the quality of my favourite camera app.

Color Stream iPhone App

September 5th, 2010 in Design, Tools

I’ve been playing with the free version of Peppermint on the iPhone for a while to create colour palettes and it’s been pretty good, but now there’s a new app called Color Stream and it’s really very good. The app is very simple to use, there’s three different options to create a palette.

Showing Off My Menu

August 19th, 2010 in Tools

Not just any menu, my Apple OS X menu and the little apps that I use on a day to day basis; this post follows ‘Showing Off My Dock’ where I listed all the applications I have on my Dock. The applications on the menu bar are slightly different – usually either a preference menu or a small app that does one task and one task only.
